LGBTQ+ History in Berlin

Christian Pulz organized the first public LGBTQ demonstration in the GDR, often called the first Christopher Street Day there.

Berlin's most famous gayborhood, the "Regenbogenkiez" (Rainbow District) around Nollendorfplatz, is a vibrant hub of queer life. It hosts major events like the Lesbian and Gay City Festival, Christopher Street Day, Easter Berlin - Leather and Fetish Week, and Folsom Europe, drawing ardent local and international pride. Berlin's "alternative" queer protest event Kreuzberg Pride was born.

West Berlin’s liberal environment from the 1960s onward fostered a thriving queer culture, amplified by reunification in 1990, which reshaped LGBTQ communities and identities citywide. Despite challenges, underground networks emerged in East Berlin, offering a sense of solidarity. Meanwhile, West Berlin’s free press both celebrated and critiqued LGBTQ culture.

Today, Berlin is a global LGBTQ haven, with spaces like Möbel Olfe, SchwuZ, and iconic parties such as Chantal’s House of Shame. Nollendorfplatz remains the heart of queer Berlin, lined with bars like Roses and Südblock, and alive with sex workers and diverse communities, showcasing the city’s rich LGBTQ heritage and resilience.

Berlin's gay bars and iconic gay parties offer a wide range of experiences for those seeking both intimacy and high-energy fun. Whether you're in Kreuzberg, Prenzlauer Berg, or Schöneberg, each of these bars or clubs offers a unique glimpse into Berlin's vibrant queer culture. From Heile Welt’s cozy cocktails to Zum Schmutzigen Hobby's bold drag shows, these spots reflect the diversity and inclusivity that make Berlin a global hub for the LGBTQ+ community.

Other especially LGBT-friendly neighborhoods of Berlin are Kreuzberg, Prenzlauer Berg, and Neukölln.
